Verbal Humour: Evolution and Trends

The University of Burgos and the Ibero-American Foundation for Cultural and Creative Industries organise the First International Interdisciplinary Conference Verbal Humor: Evolution and Trends, which will take place at the Faculty of Humanities and Communication on July 11-13, 2018. The aim of this conference is to stimulate critical debate on the use of humor today. Given its interdisciplinary nature, this conference is open to contributions in the fields of Linguistics, Literature, Communication and Gender Studies, among others.

Confirmed keynote speakers include Salvatore Attardo (Texas A & M University) and Leonor Ruiz Gurillo (University of Alicante). The presence of monologists is also expected.


The organisers invite proposals of no more than 350 words for twenty-minute papers to be sent through the conference website. Proposals must address current debates in Verbal Humour focusing on the following topics:


  • Humorous texts.
  • Humour in audiovisual media.
  • Translation of humour
  • Humour in social networks.
  • Humour and teaching of languages.
  • Philosophical thinking, inference and humour.
  • Humour and gender.


Important dates:

The deadline for submitting proposals is March 16, 2018.

Notification of acceptance will be given before March 30, 2018.



After a peer review process, a selection of the papers presented at the conference will be published in the international journal Monograma. Revista Iberoamericana de Cultura y Pensamiento.

Also, selected contributions of high quality according to the Scientific Committee will be proposed for an extended version in a volume with a prestigious publishing house. At this step, proposals will undergo a second peer review process.
